We’re excited to announce that our founder, Hannah Moore, CFP®, will be spending part of her summer running the fourth offering of The Externship. This cutting-edge mentorship and training program is designed for anyone interested in financial planning, and it’s something that Hannah is very passionate about.

We’re thrilled to highlight Hannah’s work and talk about why it’s so important to invest in the next generation of financial planners.

The Externship Offers Everyone a Chance to Learn

Why is Hannah so passionate about The Externship? Because the best way to learn financial planning is from other professionals. As Hannah says, “In my career, I was so grateful to have planners who helped me, but that’s not the case for so many coming into this space. It’s so wonderful to provide them with guidance in this medium.

Many aspiring financial planners get their first chance for hands-on experience through a traditional internship at a financial planning firm. But these opportunities are often few and far between, especially in rural areas. And many aspiring planners, especially underserved and nontraditional students, don’t have the chance to participate in an internship.

While The Externship was initially created as a solution to pandemic restrictions on in-personal courses and internships, it’s grown so much since 2020. Now, it continues to offer mentorship, hands-on projects, and detailed coursework to participants throughout the country.

It’s affordable and accessible, making it the perfect opportunity for students, career changers, practicing advisors, and everyone who wants to learn about the profession and gain transferable skills. The Externship is open to anyone, not just college students in specific degree programs or people preparing to take the Certified Financial Planner™ exam. It’s designed to help more people find this profession because everyone benefits from a diverse and inclusive community.

Better Training Improves the Profession

With all the upheaval and market uncertainty that’s become the status quo over the last few years, more people are relying on financial planners to help them manage their money. Financial planning isn’t just about preparing for retirement — it can help people save for college, buy a home, change careers, and feel confident in their financial decision-making.

Training new financial planners, especially those from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives, improves the profession. It helps us serve more clients and give more personalized advice. We’re past the days of giving one-size-fits-all tips like “be debt free” or “always buy a house instead of renting.” New planners aren’t bound by outdated traditions and the creativity and innovation they bring help all of us serve our clients better.

Clients Are the Heart of Financial Planning

Finally, we’d like to take this opportunity to thank our clients. You are the reason we get to do work that matters to us. As Hannah says, “The reason I love my job is because of my clients.” You are the reason we constantly want to learn more and find new ways to manage money. Everyone here at Guiding Wealth is so thankful for the chance to work with you and help you reach your goals.
