Guiding Wealth Updates: Summer 2024

It’s been a busy 2024 here at Guiding Wealth! We’ve been working on a ton of amazing things, but our first priority is always to provide exceptional service and care to our clients. But if you’re curious about the inner workings here at Guiding Wealth and what we’ve been up to (outside of managing accounts and advising clients!), read on.

Our fifth year of The Externship

In 2020, Hannah Moore, CFP® (owner of Guiding Wealth), teamed up with the Financial Planning Association to help financial planning students who lost their internships due to the pandemic. That was the start of  The Externship — and just last week, we kicked off our fifth Externship.

Our goal with The Externship is to train a whole new generation of financial planners — especially those from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives. The Externship helps financial planners (and CFP® students) serve more clients and give more personalized advice by learning from other experts and exploring new strategies that aren’t always taught in their universities.

We also had some exciting news at the end of May: The CFP Board, one of The Externship’s largest sponsors and a regulatory body in the profession, agreed to increase the experience hours that Externs can earn. Previously, Externs could earn 180 CFP Standard Pathway hours, but now they can earn 500! That is a huge portion of the required experience hours needed to earn your CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation, making this program an even more vital part of a CFP student’s training.

The Externship program is near and dear to Hannah’s heart—and the hearts of our entire team!

Hannah Moore, CFP®, in the press

As part of our Externship promotion phase, Hannah (and The Externship) has also been featured in a number of articles and publications! If you’re curious about The Externship or Hannah’s thoughts on improving the financial planning profession, check out these recent features:

Hannah takes another trip around the sun!

Yes, Hannah is another year older and definitely one of the wisest women we know. Now a mom to three kids under 6 and owner of three businesses, she’s done so much in such a short time. We, the team here at Guiding Wealth, know that her main driver is her clients — and the passion she holds for helping people understand their finances and plan for the life they want.

Hannah also has a ton of wisdom to share (although she would probably humbly disagree). When we asked her what she’s learned since her last birthday, she said: “Prioritize what matters.” Here’s a great story about a time when Hannah had to reschedule a meeting because she promised her kids a trip to the duck races.

Hannah’s focus on parental leave access to financial planners

Because she’s not busy enough, Hannah also helped to lead a university study on the financial planning profession’s access to parental leave. The study and resulting peer-reviewed paper have been making waves and starting important conversations. She also created a guide for financial planners and other business owners prepping for maternity or paternity leave.

The Guiding Wealth residents are making tremendous progress!

In case you missed it, Hannah started The Guiding Wealth Residency late in 2023. Similar to the “teaching hospitals” of the medical field, The Residency is a hand-selected group of up-and-coming financial planners who get the chance to work directly under Hannah and learn how we work with our clients here at Guiding Wealth.

Hannah selected candidates who consistently performed well in her monthly Amplified Planning CORE financial planning training exercises and who have completed The Externship. As part of The Residency, Residents are:

  • Learning the ins and outs of working 1:1 with clients
  • Developing a one-time plan option (an affordable alternative to ongoing wealth management)
  • Creating marketing strategies to help Guiding Wealth connect with and serve more people
  • Reviewing Guiding Wealth operations and processes to ensure our clients get the best service

These Residents are an amazing addition to Guiding Wealth, and they’re learning so much. The Residency will be a major cornerstone of our growth here at Guiding Wealth, and we’re looking forward to sharing more with you as Residents continue to thrive under Hannah’s guidance.

Our team is expanding!

We’ve been growing a lot here at Guiding Wealth, especially as our other endeavors are reaching new corners of the financial planning world! In early 2023, we hired Lenard Dossey as our Director of Education for our Amplified Planning branch. A former award-winning elementary and middle-school teacher, Lenard is passionate about lifelong learning and finding innovative solutions to educational challenges. He stepped out of the classroom and into Amplified Planning where he is responsible for shaping our educational landscape and ensuring courses follow instructional design and pedagogical best practices. He also works extensively with the Guiding Wealth Residency Program!

In mid-2023, we also hired Sarah Warren as our Director of Marketing & Communications. Since then, Sarah has helped us establish ourselves even more in the industry through a strong brand, strategic marketing, and thought leadership. She’s also built relationships with firms, sponsors, and more as we entered Externship season — and is a huge part of the success behind the 2024 Externship’s popularity.

In May of this year (2024), we brought on a new Director of Marketing & Operations: Latasha Doyle. Latasha’s role will focus on digital marketing while Sarah steps into the Communications Director role full-time. Now, Sarah will be even more dedicated to helping Hannah build relationships with firms, sponsors, and more — while Latasha will help us expand our reach to new potential clients and fellow financial planners.

If you’d like to learn more about Lenard, Sarah, Latasha, or anyone else on our team, visit our About page!

What will the next half of 2024 bring? Stay tuned!

It’s hard to believe that Hannah and her team have managed to promote and begin hosting an 8-week, industry-standard program – while also serving our firm’s clients and training other CFP® professionals.

Hannah’s vision for this profession and the potential of financial planning is a huge motivator for our team, and we are so thankful you’re here. Whether you’re a current client, interested in working with Guiding Wealth, or you’re a peer in the financial services industry, we thank you for your support!
